Hydrotherapy for Senior Dogs

As our companions get older, just like us, their mind stays young but their bodies begin to age. Over time, age related conditions such as osteoarthritis begin to take their toll on mobility causing inflammation and chronic pain. It is then we start to see behavioural changes from reluctance to go walking, reactivity and even depression. The lights go out in their eyes and they appear to lose their purpose of life.

This does not have to be the inevitable norm. With a multi modal intervention plan you can manage the effects of ageing and even slow down muscular and skeletal degeneration.

Pain relief, weight management, proven supplements, appropriate diet, therapy and home management are thrown into the pot for a remarkable recipe used to prolong your companion’s mobility, fitness and well-being but ultimately more years with their family.

At AquaCanis our part is to provide specialised Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy treatments with a deep understanding of canine behaviour. Time and time again we see our older patients nervously and reluctantly walk through the door and wonder what lay ahead of them. Always, the first time they come to see us is to ensure the only thing asked of them is to enjoy the treats, try on a floatation coat and wander around if they chose to do so, then look forward to coming back again to begin treatment.

Our aim is to not only target the weak areas but to give relief to the load bearing limbs, muscle and fascia that have been over compensating. We build core strength, promote balance and forward motion.

Our pool is heated to a constant 32-33 degrees. The warmth of the water aids pain relief and reduces muscle spasm and contracture. The hydro static pressure can reduce swelling and with support we can achieve mobility and a range of movement difficult to achieve on land. Over time cardiovascular fitness increases, mobility improves, pain and inflammation are reduced. Muscle mass and core strength increase, their confidence and sense of wellbeing is remarkable then… their lights are turned back on!
